Keep many notes, format them with Markdown, count words and reading time, find and replace, go back to earlier versions, share a note as a link, and download it as TXT, Markdown or Word. How to use the online notepad

  1. Start typing. The note saves itself; the first line becomes its title unless you type one.
  2. Keep several notes. New note adds one; the list and search box find them again. Open file imports .txt, .md or a backup.
  3. Format with Markdown and switch to Preview or Split to see it formatted.
  4. Use the tools: find and replace, case and line transforms, version history.
  5. Share or download. Share link copies a link that carries the note; Download saves TXT, Markdown, HTML or Word.

How the counts work

  • Words are runs of letters or digits in any script; isn't, e-mail and 3.5 count once.
  • Characters count what you see, so an emoji is one character, not two.
  • Sentences end with . ! or ? followed by a space or the end of the text.
  • Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for non-fiction in Brysbaert (2019).

Privacy and storage

Notes are stored with the browser's Web Storage on your device. This site has no account system and never receives your text. Share links keep the note after the #, which browsers do not send to servers; the note is only as private as the link. Private or incognito windows delete notes when closed, and clearing this site's data deletes them too, so keep backups of anything important.

Disclaimer: browser storage can be cleared by you, your browser or cleaning apps. Download a backup regularly; this tool is provided as is.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my notes saved?

In your browser's local storage on this device, under tool.thebukitbesi.com. Nothing is uploaded, so the notepad works offline and nobody else can read your notes. They stay until you delete them or clear this site's data. Notes do not sync between devices or browsers: use Backup to download a .json file and Restore on the other device.

Does the notepad save automatically?

Yes. Every change is saved within half a second and the status line shows Saved with the time. The notepad also keeps up to 20 snapshots per note, taken at most every 2 minutes while you write, so you can go back to an earlier version under Version history. Press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac) to take a snapshot at any time.

How do I share a note without an account?

Choose Share link. The note is compressed and placed after the # in the link, a part of the URL that browsers never send to a server, so the text travels only inside the link itself. Whoever opens it gets a copy as a new note in their own notepad. Anyone with the link can read the note, so share it only with people you trust.

How is reading time calculated?

Words divided by 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for non-fiction found in Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies. A 1,000-word article shows 4 min. Words are runs of letters or digits, so contractions such as isn't and hyphenated words such as e-mail count once, and Malay, Chinese and other scripts are counted too.

Can I write in Markdown?

Yes. Use # for headings, **bold**, *italic*, ~~strikethrough~~, - or 1. for lists, - [ ] and - [x] for checklists, > for quotes, backticks for code and [text](https://link) for links. Switch to Preview or Split to see it formatted. Export as .md keeps the Markdown, .html and Word .docx keep the formatting, and .txt keeps the plain text.

How much can I store?

Browsers give each site about 5 MB of local storage, shared by all notes and their snapshots; that holds hundreds of thousands of words of plain text. If storage fills up the notepad says so; download a backup and delete old notes or snapshots to make room. Very long single notes, such as whole books, are better kept as files.

Is this the same as Windows Notepad?

It works like Windows Notepad for plain text, but adds what Notepad lacks: several notes in one place, automatic saving and version history, Markdown formatting, counts and reading time, regex find and replace, line tools such as sort and remove duplicates, share links and Word export. It runs on phones and any computer with a browser.
