Worked example
A VTU student with a CGPA of 8.2 subtracts 0.75 to get 7.45, then multiplies by 10: 74.5%. The same CGPA is 77.9% with the CBSE formula, which is why using the right formula matters on job and admission forms.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by 9.5 if your university does not publish its own formula. This is the CBSE method and the most widely used default, so a CGPA of 8.2 equals 77.9%. Why does CBSE multiply CGPA by 9.5?
CBSE derived the factor from past results: students in the top grade band scored about 95% on average, so a 10-point CGPA is scaled by 9.5 to approximate a percentage. Many institutions also use CGPA × 9.5 when a university has not published its own conversion.
Which formula should I use for a job or admission form?
Use the formula printed on your marksheet or in your university's conversion certificate. If you do not have one, ask your university's examination section for a CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate, because employers and admission offices may accept only the official figure.
How do I convert a 4.0 GPA to percentage?
There is no single standard. A simple proportional conversion is GPA ÷ 4 × 100, so 3.5 becomes 87.5%. Many universities and foreign credential evaluators use their own tables, so check the receiving institution's requirement.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Reverse the same formula. With CGPA × 9.5, divide the percentage by 9.5: 75% is about 7.89 CGPA. With (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, divide by 10 and add 0.75: 75% is 8.25 CGPA. The converter does this for whichever formula you choose.
