How the PTPTN instalment is worked out

  1. Ujrah = principal × 1% × period (years). No compounding.
  2. Total repaid = principal + ujrah.
  3. Monthly instalment = total repaid ÷ (years × 12).
  4. Full settlement: the principal balance only, because ujrah is charged up to the current month.

Example: RM30,000 × 1% × 15 = RM4,500 ujrah; RM34,500 ÷ 180 months = RM191.67 a month.

Frequently asked questions

How is PTPTN repayment calculated?

Work out the ujrah as principal × 1% × the period in years, add it to the principal, then divide by the number of months. A RM30,000 loan over 15 years: RM4,500 ujrah, RM34,500 in total, RM191.67 a month.

What is the PTPTN instalment for RM30,000?

RM191.67 a month over 15 years (RM4,500 ujrah), or RM 150.00 a month over 20 years (RM6,000 ujrah). A longer period lowers the instalment but adds ujrah.

When does PTPTN repayment start?

Repayment starts 12 months after the loan ends, that is after you finish studying, without waiting for a notice from PTPTN. Monthly ujrah is charged from the 13th month; paying early within those 12 months carries no ujrah.

How much do I save by settling PTPTN early?

Full settlement only charges ujrah up to the current month, so the remaining future ujrah is not payable. For RM30,000 over 15 years, after 5 years of payments the principal balance is RM 20,000.00 and you save RM 3,000.00 of ujrah.

Is there a PTPTN repayment discount in 2026?

No. PTPTN has stated there is no repayment discount under Budget 2026. The earlier 10% to 20% discounts were time-limited campaigns that have ended.

Can I lower my PTPTN instalment?

Yes, through restructuring the period can be extended to age 60 with a minimum instalment of about 5% to 8% of gross income, subject to PTPTN's approval. The 1% a year ujrah applies for the extended period.

What is PTPTN ujrah?

Ujrah is a 1% a year service charge (fee) under Shariah principles, replacing conventional interest. It is worked out on the principal for the repayment period and does not compound.
