UPU Merit Calculator 2026/2027
The UPU merit score = 90% academic + 10% co-curriculum. For SPM, academic = [(4 universal subjects ÷ 72 × 40) + (2 best package ÷ 36 × 30) + (2 best others ÷ 36 × 10)] ÷ 80 × 90; UPU's official STEM A example scores 93.24. For STPM and matriculation, academic = CGPA ÷ 4 × 90. Pick your grades for your own merit score.

UPU's official examples
- STEM A (BM A+, English A, History A+, Mathematics A+, Physics A+, Chemistry A, Additional Mathematics A, Biology A-, Islamic Education A+): universal (18+16+18+18) ÷ 72 × 40 = 38.89; package (18+16) ÷ 36 × 30 = 28.33; best others (18+16) ÷ 36 × 10 = 9.44; academic (38.89 + 28.33 + 9.44) ÷ 80 × 90 = 86.24; with 7 co-curriculum, merit 93.24.
- STEM C: universal 28.89, one package subject A- ÷ 18 × 30 = 23.33, best others 9.44 → academic 69.37, merit 78.87 with 9.5 co-curriculum.
- Arts and Humanities (package Economics A-, Principles of Accounting A+): 32.22 + 26.67 + 5.56 → academic 72.51, merit 82.01 with 9.5 co-curriculum.
How it is calculated
- Universal (40): Bahasa Melayu + English + Mathematics + History ÷ 72 × 40.
- Package (30): the two best package subjects ÷ 36 × 30 (STEM C: one ÷ 18 × 30).
- Best others (10): the two best of the remaining subjects (including Islamic or Moral Education, Science and leftover package subjects) ÷ 36 × 10.
- Academic (90): (universal + package + best others) ÷ 80 × 90, each part rounded to 2 decimals as in UPU's examples.
- Merit: academic + co-curriculum (maximum 10).
The circular's STEM B example lists Bahasa Melayu as A+ but counts it as A (16), so it is not used as a test; this calculator follows the set grade values.

Frequently asked questions
How is the UPU merit score calculated?
Merit = academic marks (90%) + co-curriculum marks (10%), so the maximum is 100. For SPM leavers the academic part comes from SPM grades; for STPM, matriculation and asasi it comes from CGPA; co-curriculum marks are supplied by KPM's BSKK.
What is the UPU merit formula for SPM leavers?
Academic = [(4 universal subjects ÷ 72 × 40) + (2 best package subjects ÷ 36 × 30) + (2 best other subjects ÷ 36 × 10)] ÷ 80 × 90. In UPU's STEM A example, 38.89 + 28.33 + 9.44 gives academic marks of 86.24, and with 7 for co-curriculum the merit is 93.24.
Which are the universal subjects in UPU merit?
Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics and History (Sejarah), which carry 40 of the 80 points. Islamic Education, Moral Education and Science count in the best other subjects if they are among your two best.
How is STEM C merit calculated?
For the STEM C package only one package subject counts, ÷ 18 × 30, not two. UPU's example with BM A, English B, Mathematics B+, History A-, package A- and best others A+ and A gives academic marks of 69.37 and merit 78.87 with 9.5 co-curriculum.
How is STPM and matriculation merit calculated?
Academic marks = CGPA ÷ 4.00 × 90, plus co-curriculum marks (maximum 10). UPU's example: a CGPA of 3.50 gives 78.75, and with 9.00 co-curriculum the merit score is 87.75.
Where do co-curriculum marks come from?
For school candidates (SPM, STPM, STAM) the 10% co-curriculum mark is set by KPM's Sports, Co-curriculum and Arts Division (BSKK) from PAJSK records. For matriculation and asasi it is supplied by the division or university running the programme.
What are the SPM grade values for UPU merit?
A+ 18, A 16, A- 14, B+ 12, B 10, C+ 8, C 6, D 4, E 2 and G 0. For STPM and matriculation, A and A+ are worth 4.00, A- 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.00, and so on down to F 0.00.
