Renewing road tax in Malaysia
- Where: the MyJPJ app or website, JPJ counters, Pos Malaysia and authorised online agents.
- When: up to 2 months before expiry, with insurance or takaful valid for the whole period.
- No sticker: since 10 February 2023, Malaysian-owned private cars and motorcycles need not display a road tax sticker; the digital LKM in MyJPJ is enough.
- Long lapse: if it expired more than 3 years ago, a PUSPAKOM inspection is needed first.
- Hybrids and diesel: hybrids pay by engine cc like petrol cars. Some sources say diesel cars pay more, which could not be confirmed, and the government is studying a cut for diesel vehicles.
- Coming change: the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2026 will make owners declare where the vehicle is mainly used, ending cheaper registration in Sabah, Sarawak or the islands for cars used elsewhere; no start date yet.
Compound for expired road tax (JPJ 2026)
| Compound paid within | Amount |
|---|---|
| 1–15 days | RM 150.00 |
| 16–30 days | RM 200.00 |
| 31–60 days | RM 300.00 |
For an expired LKM with valid insurance. Unpaid compounds go to court, where the fine can reach RM2,000, and outstanding summonses block renewal.

Frequently asked questions
How much is road tax for a 1.5-litre car in Malaysia?
RM90 a year (RM45 for 6 months) for a privately owned saloon of 1,401 to 1,600 cc in Peninsular Malaysia, such as a Perodua Myvi 1.5 or Honda City. A non-saloon of the same size pays RM120, Sabah and Sarawak RM72 (saloon), Labuan RM 36.00 and Langkawi RM 45.00.
How is road tax calculated in Malaysia?
By engine cc and the body type on your VOC (saloon or non-saloon). Up to 1,600 cc it is a flat rate; above that, a base plus a rate for every cc above the band's start. A 1,798 cc saloon pays RM200 + 198 × RM0.40 = RM 279.20; a 1,998 cc saloon RM 379.00 and a 1,998 cc non-saloon RM 439.20.
How much is EV road tax in 2026?
Since 1 January 2026, electric cars pay by total motor power: RM20 up to 50 kW, RM10 for each extra 10 kW to 100 kW, then higher steps. A BYD Atto 3 (150 kW) pays RM 160.00, a Tesla Model 3 RWD (208 kW) RM 280.00, and the top band above 1,010 kW is RM20,000.
Why do company cars pay more road tax?
Company-registered saloons have their own, higher table in Peninsular Malaysia. A Toyota Camry 2.5 pays RM 867.00 privately but RM 2,221.00 when registered to a company. Company non-saloons pay the private rate.
How much is motorcycle road tax?
RM2 a year up to 150 cc, RM30 for 151 to 200 cc (RM9 in Sabah and Sarawak), RM50 for 201 to 250 cc, RM250 for 501 to 800 cc and RM350 above 800 cc. Sources disagree on 251 to 500 cc in the Peninsula (RM100 or RM180), so check MyJPJ. Electric motorcycles up to 7,500 W pay RM2.
How do I renew road tax?
On the MyJPJ app or website, at JPJ counters, Pos Malaysia or authorised agents, up to 2 months before it expires, with insurance or takaful valid for the whole period. You can renew for 12 months or for 6 months at half the price. Since 10 February 2023 private vehicles owned by Malaysians need not display a sticker; the digital LKM in MyJPJ is enough.
What is the fine for expired road tax?
JPJ's 2026 compound for an expired LKM with valid insurance is RM150 if paid within 15 days, RM200 within 30 days and RM300 within 60 days; in court the fine can reach RM2,000. If it expired more than 3 years ago, a private vehicle needs a PUSPAKOM inspection before renewal.
