How fidyah is worked out
- Delayed qada: days × Ramadans passed × rate. The fast must still be made up.
- Pregnant or nursing, for the child: days × (1 + Ramadans passed) × rate, and make up the fast.
- Unable to fast (old age or chronic illness): days × rate, with no qada.

Frequently asked questions
How is fidyah calculated?
Multiply the number of fasts not made up by the number of Ramadans that have passed, then by your state's fidyah rate. In Selangor (local rice, RM2.00): 5 days delayed past one Ramadan = 5 cupak = RM10.00; delayed past two Ramadans, RM 20.00.
What is the 2026 fidyah rate in Selangor?
Lembaga Zakat Selangor sets 2026 rates by rice type: RM2.00 a day (local super special rice), RM4.30 (fragrant, brown, ponni, imported and glutinous rice) and RM6.30 (basmathi, Japanese and red rice).
What is the fidyah rate in the Federal Territories?
RM4.00 a day for 2026. Someone unable to fast for the whole 30 days of Ramadan pays RM 120.00.
Does fidyah multiply if the qada is delayed?
Yes, under the relied-upon Shafi'i view followed in Malaysia, every Ramadan that passes before the fast is made up without a valid reason adds one fidyah for each day. The fast must still be made up. The Maliki and Hanbali schools do not multiply it.
Who must pay fidyah?
Those who delay making up a fast past the next Ramadan without a valid reason; those unable to fast because of old age or an illness with no hope of recovery (fidyah without qada); and pregnant or nursing women who did not fast out of fear for the child (qada and fidyah).
Does a pregnant woman pay fidyah or make up the fast?
If she did not fast out of fear for herself, she only makes up the fast. If it was out of fear for the unborn or nursing child, she makes up the fast and pays one cupak of fidyah for each day.
Where do I pay fidyah?
To your state's religious council or zakat centre, including online portals such as Lembaga Zakat Selangor and Pusat Pungutan Zakat Wilayah Persekutuan. Each state sets its rate from the current price of rice.
