How to calculate income zakat
- Add up yearly income: salary, bonus, allowances and other income.
- Choose a method: gross (simpler, 2.5% of total income) or net, after had kifayah and EPF.
- Compare with the nisab: the value of 85 g of gold set by your state zakat body (Selangor's nisab implies RM 455.86 a gram).
- Take 2.5%: if you reach the nisab, zakat = 2.5% × income liable to zakat.
- Claim the rebate: enter the zakat in the rebate section of LHDN e-Filing, with the zakat body's receipt.

Frequently asked questions
How is income zakat calculated in Malaysia?
Zakat = 2.5% of yearly income once it reaches the nisab. On a RM5,000 monthly salary (RM60,000 a year) by the gross method, zakat is RM1,500 a year or RM125 a month.
What is the income zakat nisab for 2026?
The nisab is the value of 85 g of gold, so it moves with the gold price. Lembaga Zakat Selangor set RM38,748 for July to December 2026 and RM42,047 for January to June 2026. By the gross method, that equals a salary of about RM3,229 a month. Other states set their own nisab.
What is the difference between the gross and net methods?
The gross method takes 2.5% of total income. The net method first deducts had kifayah (basic needs for you and your dependants) and EPF contributions. On RM5,000 a month with a non-working spouse and two children, deductions are RM20,544, leaving RM39,456 and zakat of RM986.40 a year.
What are the LZS had kifayah amounts for 2026?
A year: working adult RM4,944, non-working adult RM2,004, child aged 7 to 17 RM4,896, child aged 6 and under RM2,100, and a dependant studying in higher education RM7,356. These are Selangor's rates; other states differ.
Does zakat reduce my income tax?
Yes. Zakat paid to a state zakat body is a 100% tax rebate under section 6A(3) of the Income Tax Act 1967, taken straight off your tax up to the tax charged. With RM1,200 tax and RM1,500 zakat, the tax becomes zero, but the extra RM300 is not refunded.
Can zakat be deducted from my salary?
Yes. Under a salary deduction scheme your employer deducts monthly zakat, for example RM125 for RM1,500 a year, and your monthly PCB is reduced at the same time. Keep the receipt or statement for e-Filing.
When should I pay income zakat?
Monthly by salary deduction or as a lump sum. To claim the tax rebate for a year of assessment, pay by 31 December of that year.
