How this calculator works

  1. Three periods: the next periods are projected from the start of your last period and your cycle. The iddah ends at the start of the third period after the talak. If the talak was during purity, at least 32 days; during menstruation, at least 47.
  2. Three months: the same Hijri date three months later.
  3. Four months and ten days: the same Hijri date four months later, plus ten days.
  4. Hijri months follow Malaysia's official takwim (MABIMS imkanur rukyah criteria), so the number of days depends on whether months have 29 or 30 days.

Ihdad: what a widow avoids

JAKIM's guideline makes ihdad (mourning) required of a woman whose husband has died. Throughout the iddah she avoids:

  • perfume and scented products;
  • kohl, make-up and henna;
  • jewellery and ornaments;
  • bright or decorative clothing worn to adorn.

She stays in the home she lived in when her husband died, and may go out for needs such as work, medical care or buying necessities.

Rights during the iddah

  • Talak raj'i: the wife is entitled to maintenance and housing throughout the iddah, and the husband may reconcile before it ends.
  • Iddah maintenance and mut'ah can be claimed in your state's Syariah Court.
  • Remarriage: a woman may not marry another man until the iddah ends.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the iddah after divorce?

For a woman who still menstruates, the iddah is three periods of purity (quru') and ends when the third menstruation after the talak begins; on a 28-day cycle that is usually about two months, and at least 32 days. A woman who does not menstruate waits three Hijri months, a pregnant woman until delivery, and a divorce before consummation has no iddah.

How long is the iddah after a husband's death?

Four Hijri months and ten days, about 130 days, even if the marriage was not consummated. For example, a death on 14 October 2026 (3 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH) means the iddah ends on 20 February 2027 (13 Ramadan 1448 AH), after 129 days. If the wife is pregnant, the iddah ends when she gives birth.

How are three periods of purity counted?

In the Shafi'i school, quru' means a period of purity. If the talak happens while she is pure, the rest of that purity counts as the first, and the iddah ends when the third menstruation after the talak begins. If the talak happens during menstruation, that menstruation does not count. Example: last period 1 October 2026, 28-day cycle, talak on 14 October 2026: the iddah ends on 24 December 2026, after 71 days.

What is ihdad and who must observe it?

Ihdad is mourning by giving up adornment. It is required of a widow for the whole iddah of 4 months and 10 days (or until delivery). She avoids perfume, kohl and make-up, henna, jewellery and bright clothing, and stays in the marital home except for needs. Ihdad is not required after a divorce.

Does a pregnant widow wait 4 months and 10 days?

No. According to the Federal Territories Mufti Department, the iddah of a pregnant widow ends when she gives birth, whether that is soon after the death or months later, based on Surah at-Talaq verse 4.

Can the husband take his wife back during the iddah?

Yes, after a talak raj'i (first or second talak) the husband can reconcile (rujuk) while the iddah lasts, and the wife is entitled to maintenance and housing throughout it. After the iddah ends, or after a talak bain, the marriage can only resume with a new marriage contract where the law allows it.

When does the iddah start?

From the moment the talak is pronounced or the husband dies, not from the date the divorce is registered. A divorce outside court must be reported to and confirmed by the Syariah Court, and the confirmed date of the talak is when the iddah starts.
