Malaysian IC Number Decoder
A MyKad number reads YYMMDD-PB-###G: the first six digits are the date of birth, the 7th and 8th are the place-of-birth code (for example 14 is Kuala Lumpur, 10 is Selangor), and the last four are a serial. Type a number to see the birth date, age and state or country of birth, using JPN's official code lists.

Example
900101-14-5679: 90-01-01 is 1 January 1990, a Monday; 14 is WP Kuala Lumpur; 5679 is the serial, and its last digit 9 is odd, which by convention means male. As of 25 October 2026 this person is 36.
How the decoder reads a number
- Clean: dashes and spaces are removed; exactly 12 digits are needed.
- Date: YYMMDD must be a real date (29 February only in leap years). If both 19YY and 20YY have passed, the most recent is chosen and a note appears.
- Place: the 7th and 8th digits are looked up in JPN's Kod Negeri and Kod Negara lists; unlisted codes are flagged.
- Last digit: odd or even is shown with the digit itself, because the gender convention is not published by JPN.

Privacy and your MyKad
- A MyKad number is personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010. This tool never sends, stores or puts it in the page address.
- Only authorised officers (JPN, police, customs, on-duty armed forces and authorised public officers) may inspect a MyKad (National Registration Regulations 1990, regulation 7(1)).
- For a list, the CSV export keeps only the masked number (for example 900101-14-****).

Frequently asked questions
What does a Malaysian IC number mean?
A MyKad number has 12 digits in the form YYMMDD-PB-###G. The first six digits are the date of birth, the next two are the place-of-birth code from JPN, and the last four are a serial number. For example, 900101-14-5679 is someone born on 1 January 1990 in Kuala Lumpur.
What is the state code in an IC number?
It is the 7th and 8th digits. Each state has one or more codes: Johor 01 and 21 to 24, Kedah 02 and 25 to 27, Selangor 10 and 41 to 44, Kuala Lumpur 14 and 54 to 57, Sabah 12 and 47 to 49, Sarawak 13 and 50 to 53, and so on. Code 82 means born in Malaysia with the state not known.
What do codes 60 to 99 mean?
They are for people born outside Malaysia, for example 66 Singapore, 61 Indonesia, 74 China and 75 India. Codes 83 to 93 are regional groups rather than single countries, such as 87 for the United Kingdom or Ireland and 91 for North America; 98 means stateless.
Does the last digit show male or female?
By widely observed practice, an odd last digit is male and an even one is female. JPN does not publish this rule on its code pages, so treat it as a convention rather than an official field.
Why could the birth year be 19xx or 20xx?
The number only stores the last two digits of the year, so 05 could be 1905 or 2005. The decoder picks the most recent date that has already happened and shows a note when both are possible; switch the century if the person is older.
Is it safe to type an IC number here?
The decoding runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, saved, or added to the page address, and exports show only a masked number. A MyKad number is personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, so only decode numbers you have a right to use.
Can anyone ask to see or keep my MyKad?
Under regulation 7(1) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, only authorised officers such as JPN, the police, customs, on-duty armed forces and public officers authorised by the Director-General may inspect a MyKad. JPN has said security guards have no right to demand, keep or scan it.
