How it is worked out

  1. Retirement date = your birthday at the retirement age (60 by default).
  2. Time left = years, months and days from today to that date.
  3. EPF ages = your birthdays at 50, 55, 60 and 75.
  4. Pension = 1/600 × months of service (up to 360) × final basic salary, at most 60%.
  5. Gratuity = 7.5% × months of service × final basic salary.

Retirement rules in Malaysia

  • Private sector: minimum retirement age 60 (Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012); working past 60 is by agreement.
  • Civil service: compulsory retirement at 60; optional from 40 with at least 10 years' service. JPA is studying 65.
  • EPF after 60: employer EPF 4%, employee 0% (voluntary); contributions mandatory to 75.
  • New civil servants: the Cabinet decided in January 2024 that new permanent posts will be non-pensionable, with EPF instead; existing officers keep their pension.
  • Leave cash-in (GCR): sources give different day limits, so it is left out; check with your HR or JPA.

Frequently asked questions

What is the retirement age in Malaysia?

60. The Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012 stops private employers from retiring employees before 60, and civil servants retire compulsorily at 60. JPA is studying a rise to 65, but no change has been made.

When will I retire if I was born on 15 May 1990?

At 60, on Sunday, 15 May 2050. From 14 October 2026 that is 23 years 7 months 1 day away. Enter your own date of birth for your date.

At what ages can I withdraw EPF?

At 50 you can withdraw from Akaun Sejahtera, at 55 the savings move to Akaun 55 and can be withdrawn in full, and from 60 new savings go to Akaun Emas. Contributions stay mandatory while you work, up to age 75.

How is a civil servant's pension calculated?

Monthly pension = 1/600 × months of pensionable service (up to 360) × final basic salary, so the most is 60%. 416 months on a final salary of RM5,000 gives RM 3,000.00 a month.

How much is the retirement gratuity?

Gratuity = 7.5% × months of pensionable service × final basic salary, paid once. 416 months on RM5,000 gives RM 156,000.00. You need at least 10 years of service for a pension and gratuity.

Can civil servants retire early?

Yes, optional retirement is allowed from age 40 with at least 10 years' service. Retiring at 50 after 300 months on RM4,000 gives a pension of RM 2,000.00 a month and a gratuity of RM 90,000.00.

Can a private employer make me retire before 60?

No, not on age grounds: the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012 sets 60 as the minimum. You can choose to retire earlier, and you may keep working after 60 if your employer agrees.
