How the TNB bill is worked out (RP4 tariff)

  1. Base charges: kWh × (27.03 sen energy + 4.55 sen capacity + 12.85 sen network) = 44.43 sen per kWh.
  2. EEI rebate: your usage band's rate × all kWh, for use up to 1,000 kWh.
  3. AFA: kWh × the month's AFA rate, only above the protection level.
  4. Retail charge: RM10 a month, only above the protection level.
  5. KWTBB: 1.6% for use above 300 kWh (Renewable Energy Fund).
  6. 8% SST: on the part of the bill for kWh above the protection level.

Example for 300 kWh: 300 × 44.43 sen = RM133.29, less EEI of 300 × 22.5 sen = RM67.50, a bill of RM65.79 (21.9 sen/kWh on average).

800 kWh protection to December 2026

For usage from September to 31 December 2026, the government raised the domestic protection level from 600 to 800 kWh a month. Households up to 800 kWh pay no AFA, retail charge or SST. Example for 800 kWh with a 3 sen AFA: RM 328.62 with the protection, against RM 370.15 at the standard level.

How to cut your electricity bill

  • Set air conditioners to 24–25°C and clean the filters monthly.
  • Watch the kWh on your bill: going past 600 or 800 kWh adds AFA, the retail charge and SST, and the EEI rebate shrinks as use rises.
  • Switch to LED lights and Energy Commission 5-star rated appliances.

Disclaimer: An estimate, not an official bill. The AFA rate changes every month and use above 1,500 kWh carries a higher energy charge. Check your bill and the official myTNB calculator for the exact amount.

Frequently asked questions

How is the TNB electricity bill calculated?

Multiply your kWh by 44.43 sen (energy 27.03 + capacity 4.55 + network 12.85 sen), subtract the EEI rebate (your usage band's rate × all kWh), then add KWTBB of 1.6% if you use more than 300 kWh. For 300 kWh: RM133.29 − RM67.50 EEI = RM65.79.

How much is the bill for 300 kWh?

About RM 65.79 a month: RM133.29 in charges less the EEI rebate of 22.5 sen × 300 kWh (RM67.50). There is no AFA, retail charge, KWTBB or SST at this level. For 200 kWh the bill is RM 38.86 and for 600 kWh RM 215.98.

What is the EEI rebate on a TNB bill?

The Energy Efficiency Incentive (EEI) is a rebate for usage up to 1,000 kWh a month. Your band's rate is multiplied by all your kWh: 25 sen for 1–200 kWh, 22.5 sen for 251–300 kWh, 9 sen for 551–600 kWh, down to 0.5 sen for 901–1,000 kWh. The less you use, the bigger the rebate.

What is AFA on the electricity bill?

AFA (Automatic Fuel Adjustment) is a monthly fuel cost adjustment in sen per kWh, either a surcharge or a rebate, set each month. It only applies above the protection level: 600 kWh, or 800 kWh for September to December 2026. Enter the AFA rate from your bill in the calculator.

Are households under 800 kWh exempt from AFA and SST?

Yes, for usage from September to 31 December 2026 the government raised the protection level from 600 to 800 kWh a month: domestic users up to 800 kWh pay no AFA, RM10 retail charge or 8% SST. After that the level returns to 600 kWh unless it is extended.

How much is the TNB bill for 1,000 kWh?

About RM 470.71 at the 600 kWh protection level with zero AFA: RM444.30 in charges less a 0.5 sen EEI rebate, plus the RM10 retail charge, 1.6% KWTBB and 8% SST on the 400 kWh above 600 kWh. A positive AFA adds to the bill.

Does this calculator work for Sabah and Sarawak?

No. These are TNB's domestic tariffs for Peninsular Malaysia. Sabah and Labuan are supplied by SESB and Sarawak by SEB, each with its own tariff.
