How fixed deposit interest is worked out
- Interest = deposit × yearly rate × months ÷ 12 (simple interest for one term).
- Maturity amount = deposit + interest.
- Monthly interest = deposit × rate ÷ 12.
- Renewals: each term's interest is added to the deposit, so it compounds.

Frequently asked questions
How is fixed deposit interest calculated?
Multiply the deposit by the yearly interest rate and the number of months, then divide by 12. RM10,000 at 3.8% for 12 months = RM380; for 6 months = RM 190.00. Interest is paid at maturity, or monthly for a monthly-interest FD.
How much interest does RM10,000 earn in an FD for a year?
At 3.8% a year, RM380, and RM10,380 at maturity. At 3% RM300, and at 4% RM400. Renewed every year for 5 years at 3.8%, it grows to RM 12,050.00.
Is fixed deposit interest taxed in Malaysia?
Not for resident individuals. Interest on money deposited with licensed banks and financial institutions in Malaysia is exempt from income tax for resident individuals, as LHDN's Form BE notes state.
How much of my fixed deposit does PIDM protect?
PIDM protects up to RM250,000 per depositor per member bank, principal and interest together. Deposits at different banks are protected separately, and so are Islamic and conventional deposits at the same bank.
Does a fixed deposit beat inflation?
Malaysia's headline inflation averaged 1.9% in Q2 2026. An FD at 3.8% gives a real return of about 1.9% a year after inflation; a rate below inflation means your savings lose buying power.
What happens if I withdraw an FD early?
Most banks pay no interest for withdrawals in the early part of the term, and for partway withdrawals usually pay interest at half the rate for completed months. Check your bank's terms before opening an FD.
How does the OPR affect FD rates?
Banks' FD rates move with Bank Negara's OPR, held at 2.75% on 3 September 2026. Promotional FD rates are usually a little above board rates for a set tenure and minimum amount.
