Why are there three gold prices?

  • Spot price: the world market price of pure gold in USD, converted to ringgit. It moves every minute and underlies every other price.
  • Kijang Emas: Bank Negara's official price for its 999.9 gold coins, announced every working day. The gap between its selling and buying prices is your cost if you buy and later sell back.
  • Shop price: the gold value plus a premium and a making charge. Shops buy back below what they sell for.

How to use today's gold price

  1. Pick the purity: 999 for bars and coins, 916 for most jewellery.
  2. Multiply by the weight: weight in grams × the price per gram for that purity = gold value.
  3. Add the making charge: shops charge per gram or by design.
  4. Compare: enter the shop's price to see the premium you are paying.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 999 and 916 gold?

999 gold is 99.9% pure (24 karat) and is used for bars, coins and savings. 916 gold is 91.6% gold (22 karat) and is the most common jewellery gold in Malaysia because it is harder. The price of 916 gold per gram is about 91.6% of the pure gold price.

How is the gold price per gram worked out?

The world spot price in USD per troy ounce is multiplied by the USD/MYR rate and divided by 31.1035 grams. For example, USD4,000 an ounce at RM4.20 to the dollar is RM540.15 a gram of pure gold. 916 gold is that × 0.916.

Why do gold shops charge more?

Shops add a premium and a making charge (upah) on top of the gold value, and they buy back below their selling price. Use the jewellery price check on this page to see what percentage above the gold value you are paying.

What is Kijang Emas?

Kijang Emas is Malaysia's official gold bullion coin, issued by Bank Negara Malaysia in 999.9 gold in 1 oz, ½ oz and ¼ oz sizes. Bank Negara announces its buying and selling prices every working day, and this page shows those official prices.

How often is the gold price on this page updated?

The spot price refreshes every minute while the page is open. Kijang Emas prices follow Bank Negara's daily announcement on working days. The time of the last update is shown under the price.

How do I check the price of 916 jewellery?

Gold value = weight × pure gold price × 0.916, then add the making charge per gram. If pure gold is RM500 a gram, a 10 g 916 chain holds RM4,580 of gold, and with a RM30 a gram making charge the estimate is RM4,880. Compare that with the shop's price.

How do I work out gold zakat with today's price?

The gold zakat nisab is 85 grams, so its value is 85 × today's gold price per gram. The zakat button on this page opens the gold zakat calculator with today's price filled in.
