How the unit trust calculator works

  1. Units bought = amount ÷ (NAV × (1 + sales charge)); the charge is the difference.
  2. Growth each month at the gross return ((1 + yearly)^(1/12) − 1).
  3. Yearly fees taken monthly from the value (fee ÷ 12).
  4. Net return = the yearly rate that turns your payments into the final value (IRR).

Frequently asked questions

How is a unit trust sales charge worked out?

Units are bought at NAV plus the sales charge, so RM10,500 at a 5% charge buys RM10,000 of units and pays RM500. On RM10,000 at 5% you pay RM 476.19 and get the rest in units.

How much will RM300 a month in a unit trust grow to?

RM10,000 plus RM300 a month for 10 years, at a 7% gross return with a 3% sales charge and 1.6% yearly fees, grows to about RM 62,126.01 on RM 46,000.00 invested, a net return of 4.83% a year.

How much do unit trust fees cost over time?

In the example, sales charges of RM 1,339.81 and yearly fees of RM 5,429.62 leave RM 62,126.01 against RM 71,277.18 with no charges or fees: a cost of RM 9,151.17 over 10 years. Yearly fees cost more than the sales charge over long periods.

What is the EPF i-Invest sales charge?

EPF caps the sales charge at 0.5% per purchase for funds bought online through i-Invest, against up to 3% through agents. The example plan at 0.5% grows to RM 63,671.43.

What fees does a unit trust charge?

An initial sales charge on each purchase, a yearly management fee and a trustee fee taken from the fund's value, and sometimes a switching or redemption charge. All are listed in the fund's prospectus and Product Highlights Sheet.

Are past unit trust returns guaranteed?

No. A fund's return changes every year and can be negative. Use a realistic long-term gross return and check the fund's past performance and risk in its fund fact sheet.
