How to calculate gold and savings zakat
- Separate your gold: kept gold (investment) and worn gold (jewellery you wear).
- Kept gold: at 85 g or more held for a year, zakat is 2.5% of the full value.
- Worn gold: deduct your state's uruf; zakat is 2.5% on the weight above it only.
- Savings: if the balance stays at or above the nisab for the full year, zakat is 2.5%.
- Pay and claim the rebate: pay your state zakat body and keep the receipt for the tax rebate.

Frequently asked questions
How is zakat on kept gold calculated?
If gold you keep (bars, coins or a gold account) reaches 85 grams for a full year, zakat = 2.5% × weight × gold price per gram. 100 g at RM455.86 a gram is worth RM45,586, so the zakat is RM1,139.65.
How is zakat on worn gold calculated?
Zakat applies only to the weight above your state's uruf. In Selangor the uruf is 800 g: 900 g of worn gold means 100 g is zakatable, so 100 × RM455.86 × 2.5% = RM1,139.65. Worn gold of 800 g or less owes no zakat.
What is the uruf in each state?
Selangor and the Federal Territories set 800 g, and Kelantan 600 g. Other states set their own, different figures, so check with your state religious council or zakat body and enter that uruf in the calculator.
How is zakat on savings calculated?
If your savings stay at or above the nisab for a full year, zakat is 2.5% of them. RM50,000 of savings owes RM1,250. Your state zakat body decides whether the lowest balance or the balance at the end of the year is used.
Which gold price should I use?
Use the gold price per gram announced by your state zakat body on the date your year completes. This calculator defaults to RM455.86 a gram: Selangor's RM38,748 nisab divided by 85 g.
What is the difference between kept and worn gold?
Kept gold is held as investment or savings, such as bars, coins, dinar and gold accounts, and is zakatable on its full weight once it reaches 85 g. Worn gold is jewellery that is actually worn, and only the part above the uruf is zakatable.
Does gold and savings zakat get a tax rebate?
Yes. Zakat paid to a state zakat body qualifies for the 100% income tax rebate up to your tax, the same as income zakat. Keep the receipt for LHDN e-Filing.
