Example: a chocolate cake with 2 cups of flour
The recipe asks for 2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, ½ cup oil, 1 cup milk, ¼ cup cocoa, 2 eggs and 1 tsp salt. In a 250 ml cup that is 254 g flour, 209 g sugar, 115 g oil, 258 g milk, 22 g cocoa, 120 to 130 g of egg and 6 g salt. Baking it in a 9-inch round tin instead of an 8-inch one? Multiply everything by 1.27.
How the conversion works
- Volume: cups × the cup size (250, 240 or 236.6 ml), tablespoons × 15 ml, teaspoons × 5 ml.
- Density: grams per US cup from King Arthur Baking and USDA, divided by 236.6 ml, gives grams per ml.
- Weight: volume × grams per ml. Where the two sources differ, both are shown as a range and the first (spooned and levelled) is used.
- Recipes and tins: every line is multiplied by the serving factor and the tin area ratio (round: π × d² ÷ 4; square: side²).

Tips for accurate measuring
- Flour: spoon it into the cup and level with a knife. Scooping from the bag packs it up to 20% heavier.
- Brown sugar: press it firmly into the cup; recipes assume packed.
- A kitchen scale is the most accurate for cakes and bread. Use this chart for recipes that only give cups.
- Not in the chart: cake flour, rice flour, glutinous rice flour, gula melaka and fresh grated coconut, because published figures conflict. Weigh these.

Disclaimer: Weights are estimates for spooned and levelled ingredients. Brand, humidity and how you measure can change the real weight by 5 to 15%; use a scale for the most accurate result.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams is 1 cup of flour?
1 cup of all-purpose flour is about 127 g in a 250 ml metric cup (range 127 to 132 g) and 120 g in a 236.6 ml US cup. Spoon the flour into the cup and level it; scooping straight from the bag packs it and can add 10 to 20%.
How many grams is 1 cup of sugar?
1 cup of granulated sugar is about 209 g in a 250 ml cup and 198 g in a US cup. Packed brown sugar is heavier, about 225 g, and icing sugar lighter, about 119 g, in a 250 ml cup.
How many grams is 1 cup of butter?
1 cup of butter or margarine is about 240 g in a 250 ml cup and 227 g in a US cup, which is two 113 g sticks. One tablespoon of butter is about 14 g.
How many grams is a tablespoon?
A tablespoon is a volume of 15 ml, so the weight depends on the ingredient: water 15 g, sugar 13 g, butter 14 g, flour 7.5 g and salt 18 g. A teaspoon is 5 ml, one third of a tablespoon.
Is a cup 250 ml or 240 ml?
Measuring cups sold in Malaysia, Australia and the UK are usually 250 ml metric cups. US recipes use the 236.6 ml customary cup, and US nutrition labels use 240 ml. Pick the cup size in the converter; the difference is about 5% per cup.
How much does an egg weigh?
It depends on the grade: in Malaysia Grade A is 65 to 69.9 g, Grade B 60 to 64.9 g and Grade C 55 to 59.9 g per egg in the shell. Most recipes assume a medium egg, Grade B, so the converter counts 2 eggs as 120 to 130 g.
How do I scale a recipe for a bigger cake tin?
Multiply every ingredient by the ratio of the tin areas. An 8-inch round to a 9-inch round is ×1.27, and an 8-inch square to an 8-inch round is ×0.79. Tick Resize for a different tin and the converter works out the ratio and scales the whole recipe.
